The Nelson family’s farming roots run deep — Tyler Nelson’s family has farmed for four generations and Pam’s for five. Tyler’s first agricultural experience was growing cucumbers as a kid for his grandparents' produce stand, which has been selling farm-fresh fruits and vegetables in Omaha, Nebraska, since 1983. He officially inherited and began to run the family business when he graduated high school in 2006.
Tyler and Pam’s combined passion for farming led them to start Nelson Produce Farms in 2019. Today, the couple farms more than 1,000 acres, growing corn, soybeans, watermelons, strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes and other vegetables. They also partner with farmers across the U.S. to bring wholesale produce to their two retail stands in Omaha and Elkhorn, providing more variety when Nebraska’s annual growing season is just getting started.

The farm has steadily grown over the years, and in 2024, the Nelsons installed several Valley Irrigation pivots in partnership with Mid-Continent Irrigation, a Valley Dealer. They also began using AgSense, Valley’s advanced remote management technology. This allows them to monitor pivot locations and field positions, remotely adjust pivot directions and timers, and track pressure levels to maintain consistent water delivery. By leveraging Valley pivots and AgSense, the farm has further increased operational efficiency, crop yields and sustainability.
“Being able to monitor and control the pivots remotely saves time, reduces waste, and ensures our crops get exactly what they need,” Pam explains. “It’s made a significant difference, especially during the dry months.”
However, Nelson Produce Farm is far from the average farming operation. The Nelsons are passionate about educating the public about the ins and outs of farming and the agricultural industry.
“Farming isn’t just about growing crops. It’s about feeding families and fostering a connection to where food comes from,” Pam explains.
Pam says the increasing popularity of farmer’s markets has led to a thirst for agritourism and learning about farming. “There are still a good amount of people who have a connection to farming through their family, but some in our community have never been on a farm. Opening our farm so people can learn helps build that connection,” she shares.
Children and adults alike regularly have opportunities throughout the summer and fall months to explore the world of farming with the Nelsons through field trips, events, tractor rides and other hands-on learning experiences, like picking their own produce.

A single-section Valley pivot, generously donated by Mid-Continent Irrigation, offers visitors an up-close look at modern irrigation without the logistical challenges of exploring vast agricultural fields. On hot days, children delight in running through the pivot’s sprays — a fun way to learn about the role of irrigation in farming.
“Ultimately, it’s about creating a community around good food and showing farmers' vital role in feeding the world,” Pam says.
Nelson Produce Farm exemplifies the power of innovation, hard work, and a commitment to connecting people with the land. They are not just growing crops but cultivating inspiration to sustain a passion for agriculture for generations to come. Valley Irrigation is proud to support its operation and growth through advanced irrigation technology and infrastructure.
